The need for a recognition tool became evident through employee feedback. “We had feedback from internal teams that they wanted some form of recognition,” shares Stefan Sohnchen, Agile Coach at Alef Education. While he was not involved in selecting Karma, he actively supported the idea of implementing a tool to promote appreciation among teams.
Onboarding was smooth and hassle-free. “The setup was easy, and we also had materials from David that explained how to use it. That was very straightforward, and all of us picked it up easily,” Stefan recalls.

Karma quickly became a staple for Alef’s Product and Tech teams, which work closely together and share a single group in Karma. The Content Creation team, initially using a separate group, saw slower engagement, prompting discussions about merging the groups for a more balanced experience. “Product and Tech have a lot of enthusiasm for Karma, a lot of usage, more than Content Creators,” explains Connie Shaffer, Product Operations Specialist.
Despite the varied levels of engagement, one thing became clear: Karma had a positive impact on morale. “For our math content team, who use it the most, it’s a very uplifting kind of morale booster because they work so hard to get that kind of recognition,” Connie notes. “It just pushes you to go further and do more.”
While measuring Karma’s direct impact on productivity is challenging, its influence on workplace culture is undeniable. “It’s more collegial among people because they have more instances of sharing Karma than before,” Stefan observes. This increased interaction has fostered stronger team connections and more frequent expressions of appreciation.
An unexpected benefit was the deeper sense of camaraderie it created. “For me, the unexpected was the bond that the teams created among each other and that it created a place for positive feedback in a meaningful way,” says Connie. “It made the team work and communicate better.”

Alef Education currently offers Amazon vouchers as rewards, providing employees with tangible benefits for their contributions. While smaller teams and mid-level executives engage less frequently, Connie sees Karma as a valuable tool for fostering a culture of appreciation. “I would definitely recommend it! Karma is a great way to give and receive positive feedback, accumulate points, and feel successful when you can redeem rewards. It’s a very positive platform.”
With potential plans to merge their Karma groups and encourage broader participation, Alef Education continues to evolve its approach to recognition, ensuring every employee feels valued and motivated to contribute.
