Meeting Shout-Outs: A Weekly Recognition Habit + Templates | Karma

Meeting shout-outs

Spend the last few minutes of a team meeting or standup thanking each other. Recognition becomes part of how your team already works.

Why it works

Meetings are already on everyone's calendar, so there's nothing new to remember. Thanking someone out loud, in front of the team, feels more personal than a message, and it shows everyone what good work looks like on your team.

Ending a meeting on thanks also changes its mood. People leave with energy instead of a to-do list.

How to run it

Choose the version that fits your team.

At your weekly team meeting

  1. Add it to the agenda. Make "Shout-outs" the last 5 minutes of every weekly meeting.
  2. Ask one question. "Who helped you this week?" Let 2–4 people answer.
  3. Send the karma. After the meeting, everyone who was thanked out loud gets karma in the team channel, so the thanks stays visible.

At your daily standup

  1. Keep it to one thank-you. At the end of the standup, one person thanks someone for help since yesterday.
  2. Rotate. A different person gives the shout-out each day.
  3. Or go async. If time is tight, post a thread after the standup and let people add thanks there.

Message templates

How Karma helps

Thanks said out loud is easy to forget once the call ends. With Karma, every shout-out becomes karma tied to a company value, visible to the whole team. People who missed the meeting still see who was recognized and why. Learn more about peer recognition in Karma.

How to measure

After a month, check in Culture analytics:

  • how much karma your team sends on meeting days compared to other days;
  • how many different people receive karma after meetings;
  • whether people who rarely speak up in meetings now give thanks too.

Common mistakes

  • Letting it run long. Keep it to 5 minutes, or it starts to feel like an extra meeting.
  • The same people every week. Ask quieter teammates directly from time to time.
  • Thanks that stay in the meeting. Post the karma afterwards so the recognition is visible and counted.

Frequently asked questions

What if our meetings are already too long?

Use the async version: a short thread after the meeting takes no meeting time at all.

Should the manager always start?

Only at first. After a few weeks, let anyone go first.
